How to calculate VAT in Malta step by step (18%, 7%, 5%)
This guide explains how to add VAT manually and how to check the result using the calculator.
In some shops or web portals, you may see prices with the comment "VAT not included". This means that it is not the final price, and you will have to add VAT to the amount to get the total to pay.
Formula to calculate VAT on a price without VAT
To calculate the VAT in this case, the following formula should be used:
Practical example of VAT calculation at 18%
That is, if you have a product whose value is €200 without VAT and with a 18% VAT rate, the formula would look like this:
The product price must be multiplied by the VAT percentage, and that number divided by 100. In this case, it would give €36. So the VAT amount would be €36.
Another alternative would be to divide 18% by 100, resulting in 0.18, and multiply this by €200, resulting in €36 in the same way.
Finally, to add VAT to a price, add the base price of the product, for example, €200, plus the calculated VAT of €36, giving a final result of €236.
Example of reduced VAT calculation (7%)
In the case of a product with a price of €200 without VAT to which the reduced VAT of 7% is applied, the formula allows calculating the corresponding tax for certain goods and services that have a lower taxation than the standard rate.
Example of super-reduced VAT calculation (5%)
When dealing with a product with a value of €200 without VAT subject to the super-reduced VAT of 5%, the formula is used to obtain the amount of tax applied to goods considered to be of basic necessity.
